Tackling Inequalities

Thursday 25th January 2024

09:45 AM - 12:00 PM – Online meeting – Register here

The focus of the next capability building event will be on ‘Tackling Inequality’ and will once again comprise of two sessions with distinct purposes;

09:45 AM – 10:45 AM

Joined by two fantastic guest speakers, we will firstly draw lessons and recommendations from the international work of Humanity & Inclusion, whose mission in these very different territories draw parallels to the work in the UK response.
Humanity & Inclusion’s Global Inclusion Specialist, Sophie Allin, BSc (OT), MPH, will draw from her 14 years of experience in emergency response across East and Central Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Sophie has been influencing and advising for change to response coordination mechanisms to ensure the most marginalised are included.
With specific expertise in disability inclusion, Sophie will share her experiences and reflections on the international humanitarian response coordination mechanisms, and how processes have been adapted over the past few years to include the most marginalised groups, while highlighting ongoing changes needed for more inclusive future responses.

Newcastle University Professor of Public Health, Clare Bambra, PhD, FAcSS, will then draw from her extensive analysis of the Covid-19 pandemic and bring a focus to UK health inequalities to present a conversation around the societal and structural inequalities that lead to the compounding impact of emergencies, creating gaps in experience. Published widely, her research is regularly covered by the media.

As always, we will endeavour to have time for questions and reflections but the emphasis of the second half of this meeting will focus solely on conversation.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Building on the earlier conversations, this session turns the floor over to the audience, giving time for reflections, peer learning and sharing of experiences from partners of their own success and challenges working to close/mitigate the gaps in support that see people become more susceptible to vulnerable situations.
Acknowledging that people don’t become disproportionately impacted overnight, we will take some time in breakout groups to explore what partners are doing to connect with those groups who are harder hit in emergencies and highlight good practice in relationship building before emergencies happen.
